SETUP
Recently, transients and members of the queer community have begun to disappear again.||
Sunday night, 12 JUN 2022. Yesterday Jane and Joan were reported missing after partying at the Black Flamingo nightclub in Providence Friday night. CCTV shows a middle-aged man in a black hoodie approach the pair who react with hostility, covering their noses. He sprays an aerosol at them and they become entranced before being guided into the man’s two-tone blue 1990 Ford Tempo without protest. The Program traces the car to Angelo Ikaros at his hobby farm in Dover, Massachusetts. Agents will infiltrate by night, determine the presence and nature of the unnatural, and if so, eliminate it. Because of potentially living victims, a delicate and methodical approach is advised.
WHAT ARE THEY WALKING INTO?
Angelo Ikaros, 56, is one of the Lonely. He was a serial killer of transient sex workers, an emotionally and mentally stunted savant, and a devotee of CptnSnshn since the early 90s. He married Audrey only to sire a prophesied descendant. Infertile and in denial, he used “Milk of the Black Goat” sent by CptnSnshn to alter his wife. Ikaros became one of the Furious, and his farm became a vector of Carcosa. Search or Computer Science can reveal Ikaros’ obscure out-of-print 1999 book, “Tomorrow’s Gardens”. Synopsis: in the future human remains will be essential to agriculture, and the book outlines the extraction of basic compounds for vitality and utility. Reading the text online costs 0/1 from Helplessness.
KEEPING AGENTS IN THE MAZE
Text with yellow highlights represent manifestations from Carcosa drawing Agents toward oblivion and madness. When revealed to be illusory, this costs SAN.
ARRIVING AT THE FARM
A picturesque farmhouse is surrounded by a picket-fence garden, well-tended lawn, and bountiful fenced orchard. A blue ford is parked outside. Acrid foulness wafts from the barn in the back yard.
THE ORCHARD
The arbor reads “The King’s Bounty”. From within, children can be heard laughing. Trees, grotesquely misshapen and wet with sticky yellow sap, are lush with engorged, unblemished fruit, fed on golden mana. Eating it causes an Agent to recover HP and WP at double the normal rate for 24 hours. [[[#h.1q4xjmjc3qh8 | Ikaros’ writings]]] can reveal this. Beneath the trees are many unusual cabbage-like growths, human-plant hybrid seed-pods shed by Etheldreda. If agents attempt to harm these pods, Etheldreda attacks.
THE BARN
A classic New England barn stands behind the farmhouse. Audrey’s voice cries out from within as agents approach: “Help Me!” A low grunting is heard within. Ride or Science (Biology) reveals it is the sound of a hog. Adjacent is a small greenhouse, now in ruins. A Search uncovers something enormous moved through here recently.
The Barn is filthy, repurposed into a biochemical processing factory. A worktable is bloody from Ikaros’ labors. A ravenous, spider-legged hog tries to knock agents into its trough of acid-digested Jane-and-Joan bone-slurry and eat them. 1/1D8 from the unnatural. In the hayloft: Dozens of large, labeled barrels: ammonium chloride, ammonium nitrate, bone meal, nitric acid, potassium nitrate, and nitroglycerine; along with thirty-six pints of “golden mana” fluid, and a vial of the milk of the Shub-Niggurath. Finally, a crate of volatile home-made dynamite sticks.
THE FARMHOUSE
The two-floor colonial house is a perfect American dream on the outside, and a chaotic, foetid labyrinthine nightmare on the inside.
Upended furniture, tools, and chemistry equipment haphazardly crammed in every corner. Passages stretch on impossibly and close off with junk behind Agents. 1/1D4 from Unnatural. The air reeks from waste on every surface. Unthinkable chimeras lurk within: Chickens with long, drooping necks so their heads drag on the floor; a tangle of venomous serpent-rats; what was once a cat howling pitifully from a dark corner.
Audrey’s cries for help lead Agents through choked hallways, moving to a different area whenever agents break through into a new room. Athletics and Navigation are required to proceed.
Angelo’s voice taunts, “Here piggy, piggy!”
Audrey’s Ghost wanders the halls as a beautiful golden maiden. It will try to keep Agents here until they collapse so it can feed on them.
THE LAST KING OF AMERICA
Study Time: thirty minutes. Science (Botany) +1D4%. 0/1D4 from Unnatural
This weathered chapbook seems ancient, dated AD 2112 and “dedicated to my prolific grandfather, Angelo”. A farmer, Hector Icarus loses everything during nuclear reprisals in 2076. The war is the culmination of a “cultural conflict” that began in Providence, 18 JUN 2022[[| [1]]] at an event called “The Unmasking”. Hector travels through a ravaged America. When he encounters someone in need, he offers violence, murdering them or convincing them to end their lives before processing them into Golden Mana “for health and utility”. Whoever reads it finds their family name among those consumed. By the end, Hector is a messianic figure and King of Imperial America.
“The Great Dying at last subsides. Once again, our dominion is complete. Our blood flows from the Hyades, Hastur, and Aldebaran to dwell in a blessed Golden Realm, nourished by the remains of our kin and foes! Yield your flesh for the glory of the Empire! Praise Datura! Praise the Golden Dragon, Whose Promise Precedes its Presence! All Hail Carcosa, a gem in the poisoned wastes! Long Live King Hector of House Icarus, The Last King of America!”
A MEAN GREEN MOTHER
Datura Etheldreda is a monstrous fusion of Audrey Ikaros and a Datura plant suffused with the Milk of Shub-Niggurath; now a Progeny of the Black Goat. After decades of mutations and experiments, Ikaros used her excretions to dissolve his victims into a perfect nutrient and chemical mutagen called Golden Mana. He fed it to Audrey, the crops and livestock, accelerating their mutations into grotesque abominations. To save his chance at destiny, he spliced Audrey’s genes with a mana-modified devil’s trumpet. She transformed at last into D. Etheldreda, ensuring Ikaros would have one thousand progeny.
Three hundred kilograms and five meters tall when erect, she stoops to about three. Despite her size, she is agile on twisting roots. Her most notable features, beyond eye-burning ammonia reek, are three conical yellow devil’s trumpet flowers, each large enough to engulf a human. Inside, caustic yellow acid awaits.
She demanded blood. Ikaros’ last offering was not enough and he was digested before the Agents’ arrival.
Now, she hungers for their flesh.
She first appears as a beautiful woman to an isolated Agent. She asks for help, claims captivity by her husband, warns that he’s still around here somewhere, and lures the agent away from their team-mates to consume them. She never truly speaks, but the Agents hallucinate whatever will make them follow.
She is desperate for human flesh. If trickery won’t work, she openly attacks the Agents.
+++++++ CLUES: IKAROS’ WRITINGS
Found in the Barn and Farmhouse. Reveal with Search: one for failure, two for success. Roll or pick.
| 2D4 | |
| 2 | In Ikaros’ worldview, there is nothing more evil than weakness. Even from a young age, he had violent feelings toward those he deems weak: Women, communists, and “fairies”. |
| 3 | “My father, like me, was a weak man. He never had the balls to beat me like I needed. A true king is noble and terrible as a golden blade slaked in blood”. |
| 4 | “It was 92 when my proclivities began. I don’t recall her name. Afterward, I was ashamed and angry, so I stuck her and felt such a thrill! Even after so long, I ain't even been questioned. Sunshine says it’s on account of my astral lineage and grand destiny.” |
| 5 | “I joined a video dating service and got two regrettable responses. I decided on Audrey since she was eager for children. She wasn’t nothing to look at, but those hips had promise.” |
| 6 | “Infertile sow. I could have killed her. It’d come on me like a fever, but my faith was not tested. I pacified myself on more streetwalkers." |
| 7 | A recent page: “I felt bad on account of the horrid state I put her in. Leaking and stinking to high heaven. But otherwise there’d be no mana, no bounty, no miracle! The datura will be our salvation. I never imagined she could usher a thousand progeny! Praise the king! My dynasty is assured!” |
| 8 | The final page: “It is done. All the fireworks for the masquerade are ready. At long last, I can say she is beautiful. Pretty in yellow, fat with my seed, happier than she’s ever been. She is singing in the greenhouse now, hungry for another streetwalker, but it’s only been a week. She’s eating for many, now, I reckon. A bit of her pollen should do the trick. For He whose Promise Precedes his Presence.” |
STATBLOCKS
AUDREY’S GHOST (LESSER IELE)
| INT | 14 | POW | 18 |
| HP | n/a | WP | 18 |
| SKILLS: Alertness 30%, Drain WP 30% (1D6 WP), Wither 30% (1 WP) | |||
| ASSUME IDENTITY: Lesser Iele are able to manifest in the form of a bonded identity. | |||
| DEPRESSION: Contact with the pure, overwhelming pessimism of the Iele imprints that pattern on human minds. The disorder gained from Iele contact is always depression. Iele contact automatically turns a preexisting depression acute. If someone is already suffering an acute episode, the Iele may use the SUICIDE power with immediate effect. | |||
| DRAIN ENERGY: Iele regenerates WP by draining energy from sleeping intelligent beings such as humans. Affected humans awaken normally but feel ill and unrested; they are exhausted and cannot recuperate from harm. Once per victim per night, the Iele can gain 1 WP per 1D6 WP drained from a sleeping human within 10 km. Fortunately, the Iele rarely seem to focus their attention sufficiently to accumulate much strength. | |||
| EMF: Iele can emit or manipulate electromagnetic energy for effects including fogged film, degaussed compass needles, wiped computer memory, fried electronic components in cars or phones, radio interference, and so forth. This costs 1 to 3 WP, depending on the scale of the effect (up to, say, a village or very large building) and the hardness of the target. | |||
| ENSLAVE: To recruit or kill a specific human, Iele begin by draining energy until the target reaches 0 WP and falls into a near-coma. Each morning while in that state, the victim must make a CON test. On a success, the victim awakens and recovers 1 WP; on a failure, the victim loses 1 CON, or 1D4 CON on a fumble. When the victim’s CON drops to 2, the victim stabilizes and awakens with a powerful instinct to serve the Iele, even if he or she does not know their name or nature, losing 1/1D4 SAN. Lost CON then returns, 1 point per day. The instinct to serve can be suppressed, in which case the Iele continues to drain CON until the victim dies. This costs the Iele 3 WP per night per target. | |||
| FOG: By telekinetically altering the physical properties of the atmosphere, Iele can manifest mist, fog, or clouds. Each 2 WP spent incurs a −20% penalty to Alertness, Drive, Pilot, ranged attack rolls, and other affected skills. | |||
| HORA IELELOR: Iele can wilt soft foliage within 3 meters to drain WP. For every kilogram of foliage they wilt, the Iele gains 1 WP. Afterward the area appears to be blackened and burned. | |||
| INTANGIBLE ENTITY: Iele can both sense and move/radiate through solid matter. It’s possible that very dense matter such as lead may slow or block them, but that’s up to the Handler. Their unnatural energies do not follow natural laws. | |||
| NONCORPOREAL: The Iele is not a physical entity and has no DEX score. Use its POW in place of DEX to determine when it acts each turn. | |||
| SHAME SENSE: Iele intrinsically understand the fears and shames of humans in their immediate vicinity. They utilize this knowledge to lure and provoke their victims. | |||
| TELEKINESIS: Iele can discretely affect the material world where their field strength is most intense. Iele must be “directly present” (focused both perceptually and energetically) to do so. This telekinesis can move or manipulate matter: anything from shoving a spelunker into a crevasse to discharging a firearm or opening a safe. It costs 5 WP for 1 STR; for each additional 5 WP, the STR of the force doubles. | |||
| TEMPORAL DOLDRUMS: Iele can alter the passage of time for a group of up to six humans. A sentry might believe he patrolled for two hours and come back to find eight hours elapsed. An ambulance might spend 10 minutes driving and arrive 40 minutes after departing. Recognizing such a time-slip costs 0/1 SAN; it’s easier to believe you dozed off or got lost. This costs 4 WP per increment of time added or removed, however much time that increment encompasses; both examples add 3 increments (of 2 hours and of 10 minutes, respectively) and thus cost 12 WP. Double the cost for up to 60 humans, triple the cost for up to 600 humans, etc. | |||
| TRANSCENDENT: Iele are intangible, and cannot be harmed by any material weapon or substance. Lesser Iele are vulnerable to the Elder Sign and cannot actively or passively affect anyone so protected. Whether any given hypergeometric attack affects the Iele is up to the Handler. | |||
| WITHER: 30%, 1 WP damage. Costs 2 WP. | |||
| SAN LOSS: 1/1D4 (from witnessing the unnatural or mental contact) |
DATURA ETHELDREDA, PROGENY OF THE BLACK GOAT
| STR | 30 | INT | 14 | WP | 18 |
| CON | 16 | POW | 18 | HP | 23 |
| DEX | 16 | CHA | — | ||
| SKILLS: Stealth 40%, Unarmed Combat 70% | |||||
| ACTIONS PER TURN: 3 attacks plus Alter Reality or Lure, MOVEMENT: 20m | |||||
| ARMOR: Etheldreda’s unnatural bark reduces damage from firearms to 1 (2 on a critical success), but takes full damage from melee weapons. Immune to damage from fire, electricity, or poison. | |||||
| ATTACKS: Devil’s Claw 70%, Dissolve 70%, Bullrush 40% | |||||
| ALKALINE SPORES: Within 10 meters of D. Etheldreda, creatures that rely on breathing hallucinate. CON test per turn versus intoxication similar to heavy drinking or marijuana for 1D4 rounds. | |||||
| ALTER REALITY: 20m range. Target makes a POW test or believes Etheldreda is one of their bonds for 1D4 rounds. Realizing she is not costs 0/1 from helplessness. | |||||
| BULLRUSH: Damage 2D6, only once per turn, up to 1d4 targets in its path. | |||||
| DEVIL’S CLAW (grab): Etheldreda grabs a human-sized target with one of three enormous flowers. Target is pinned and is drained of 1d10 STR per round. While being drained, the victim can only writhe and cry out. | |||||
| DISSOLVE: 20m range, 1D6 damage from acid. If the target is pinned, damage is 2D6 | |||||
| LURE: Target makes a POW test or uses their turn to move toward Etheldreda. | |||||
| SAN LOSS: 1D3/1D10 |
