I think that transhumanism has in a sense always had a place in the Mythos, Isn't that what all those Sorcerers we're trying to do? If you realize that being human is a losing proposition then trying to become post-human is a rational response. This really ties in to the Cult motivation discussion, from their perspective they are trying to help. If Humanity is doomed staying as it is then to "save" humanity we must become more like the mythos.

Forum category: Hidden / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Transhumanism

Especially true with the sharp rise of public surveillance in the UK. The AotTE is going to need hackers to turn that surveillance against the enemy. They could also use a mad superhero… "Goodnight England. Goodnight Home Service and V for Victory. Hello Severn Aerospace and V for Victorian trepanation technology."

Forum category: Hidden / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Army Of The Third Eye

My impression of the Army is somewhat at odds with the description.

Really, I don't think its as proffessional as its being portrayed, its certainly no PIRA. It doesn't have access to external training or finances which means its skills and tradecraft are self tought, just as PIRA's was in the 70's.

Its worth noting while PIRA achieved some of its most notable successes during this period (Warrenpoint for example) it also suffered an extremely high level of attrition because activity any activity is observable, this is especially true when your tradecraft is particulalrly hot or self taught.

Oh and unknowns only remain unknown if they stay out of sight, I guarrantee if a member of the Army were to start regulalry observing SAeS establishments for example they wouldn't remain unknown for very long.

Which means the armies activities have to be really low key passive observation. In otherwords the Army is pretty much a wet squib, they have information they simply can't act upon it without Special Branch/PISCES giving them a thorough going over.

Forum category: Hidden / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Army Of The Third Eye

The Count of Saint Germain (an actual 18th century person) was likewise surrounded by fantastic rumors including immortality, which he encouraged by casual reference to them, similar to how Alzis refers to his own prior "deaths". This stylistic resemblance is striking. And the truth about the Count remains a mystery to this day.

Forum category: Hidden / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Stephen Alzis

This is material from the Ice Cave. It has been trimmed but not formatted.

From: "Andrew D. Gable"

Date: Sun, 11 Apr 1999 14:07:49 -0400

First off, a preface. This probably doesn't mean anything, but when I first read "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" back in eighth grade, my first mental image of the Deep Ones was something along the lines of a Shoggoth.

Based on what I know of Yidhra (sketchy, to say the least), she seems to me like an Uber-Shoggoth. The female analogue to Ubbo-Sathla.

Geez, great minds think alike. I always saw parallels with Shoggoths and protomatter, Proto-shoggoths and Protomatter Spawn. I came up with an idea that the creation of protomatter and protomatter implants is an attempt by the Fun Guys to create their version of Shoggoths.

The Mi-go obviously have some control over "independent" protomatter (witness Operation CONVERGENCE), so here's the devious plot I've come up with: the Mi-go are endeavoring, first of all, to create a stable form of protomatter. After they figure out how to get it stable, they'll modify it slightly, injecting some DNA of their choosing. Then, at a specified time, the protomatter'll launch an assault on the person's genetic make-up, putting in its own stuff. Thing is, what would the Mi-go want to turn us into?

It seems to me this plot could also be exploited by the Brothers of the Yellow Sign.

Date: Sun, 11 Apr 1999 21:50:43 +0200
From: Davide Mana

Andrew wrote something that started me thinking along a new line. All this is crazy and highly apocryphal, and there are much more questions than answers, I fear, but humor me for a while.

Q: can you "seed" protomatter with DNA?

Protomatter, being… well, _proto-_ stuff, it should be rather low as far as internal organization goes.

Now, what if you can simply inject it with the apropriate DNA in order to induce the required organization? And then, after that, the inseminated protomatter goes on replicating in its newly informed way?

DNA is a wonderful expert system - it can follow the program, and yet update it (and itself) to take variations in the environment into account. DNA as software for protomatter machines?

All those Ultra-Darwinian egoist-gene theories that are generally frowned upon by palaeontologists and see all life as just some special effects helping DNA to replicate itself might hold a much more sinister truth than we think.

A handful of palaeontologists are interned every year as they snap under pressure (the families think they are somewhere on sabbathical) trying to understand the complex link/feedback between environmental pressure, evolution and genetics.

If somebody simply designed DNA as a tool with in-built evolutionary capabilities, everything's suddenly very very simple.

Now, how's that for a basic overview of minimum Elder Thing technology? Were they a race of genetic engeneers so advanced they simply created a DNA for the tool they needed and then used it to infect protomatter as needed? We know precious little about that, but we know they used shoggots, that are probably just a step above protomatter. Shoggots could be the minimum organization form - sort of the Elder Thing swiss army knife tool. The kind of thing you'd carry with you to camping.

On the other hand, when we say Protomatter, we think Mi-Go - because of their dealings with MJ-12 and all the rest.

We know they're smart.

And devious.

And we know they can create synthetic beings.

Q: do the MiGo have access to Elder Thing technology? Complete, no holds barred access to ET technology?

Now what if the Funguys do not have _complete_ control over the process?

You have to admit those funny-looking, five-fold simmetrical critters were pretty advanced, back then long time ago. And from the data in "At The Mountains of Madness", it seems the Elder Things were closer to us, as far as psychological makeup and general outlook on things, than the Funguys will ever be.

We shared "something" (curiosity? will to live? soul?) So what if the Mi-Go are so active and enquiring where humans are concerned because they have access to the end results of the ET technology, as a form of scavenger technology, but not possess the base know-how to duplicate it. Maybe they hope to find something within us…

Project Genome: does DNA carry an attached help-file?

Think about all this, gentlemen.

And flame me gently.

From: Mark McFadden
Date: Sun, 11 Apr 1999 16:32:28 EDT

« I came up with an idea that the creation of protomatter and protomatter implants is an attempt by the Fun Guys to create their version of Shoggoths. »

Or reverse-engineering shoggotech.

We might not be the only reason the Fun Guys stick around a dangerous neighborhood.

From: Robert Thomas

Date: Mon, 12 Apr 1999 10:48:42 GMT0BST

Davide wrote and caused the lights in my head to start flashing (either that or it's this hangover):

Q: do the MiGo have access to Elder Thing technology?
Complete, no holds barred access to ET technology?

Now what if the Funguys do not have _complete_ control over the process?
You have to admit those funny-looking, five-fold simmetrical critters were
pretty advanced, back then long time ago. And from the data in "At The
Mountains of Madness", it seems the Elder Things were closer to us, as far
as psychological makeup and general outlook on things, than the Funguys
will ever be.
We shared "something" (curiosity? will to live? soul?)
So what if the Mi-Go are so active and enquiring where humans are concerned
because they have access to the end results of the ET technology, as a form
of scavenger technology, but not possess the base know-how to duplicate it.
Maybe they hope to find something within us…
Project Genome: does DNA carry an attached help-file?

May be this is the explanation for their interest in understanding in the mental processes of humans. Given the Mi-Go metal process as outlined in DG they think in staright lines; A-B-C-D-E, and if they don't know C they can't get to E whereas us monkey boys can skip straight on to E via our metal setup.

Right then my point if you accept that the Elder things had a similar metal process to humans and you accept the hypothesis that any truely "open" system is capable of these leaps in logic. Perhaps the Mi-Go are so desperate to understand human metal process in order for them to be incorporated into the Mi-Go mind to allow them to begin to understand how the elder Thing tech they have acquired functions, to make the logically inferred leaps and allow the Mi-Go to become an open system which is what they have lost as a result of the way they have decided to evolve themselves as a species.

To create an analogy it's like a caveman given a torch, he can press the buttons and turn it on and off but has no method to understand how it works so when the light he depends on breaks he can't fix it.

Personally I can't see the elder Things including help files with DNA any way and if they did how much help would they be? Anyone ever tried to use the windows help files, better to just mess around in my opinion at least you learn something :-)

How about a situation where the Mi-Go are dependant on one specific Elder Thing device which is starting to go wrong? Are they doing what they are doing to fix the equivalent of a torch?

Anyway great thread so far, one for the cave I feel.

(And it's here indeed!
I dunno, Jurgen - 1st century AD is pretty tangential to DG, and there can't be that many agents from the Dept of Energy. Surely there are entries closer to the core interests of the list that would generate better response? I mean, "Greys" doesn't even have an entry yet. "Accord" is a stub. Vast swathes of Geography are empty. If we want a time period, "The Official Years" has nothing and "The Cowboy Years" is pretty sketchy.
I appreciate the huge amount of work you've put in, but I think we'll get more contributions from the list if we start with the core elements and then do the peripherals like these later.

Forum category: Wiki Discussion / Weekly Wiki Challenge
Forum thread: 3rd Weekly Wiki Challenge

One of those del.icio.us links is a major copyright violation. Tempting though it is to make certain things free for fairfield project users, bankrupting Pagan is probably not a good idea. can we remove that link somehow?

Otherwise, seems like a good idea - it keeps itself updated, unlike the dead and buried links listed above (is there still an "internet archive" where some of these might be preserved?).

THis leads into another point - a few days ago, I scoured the net looking for DG pages that were still alive, and added links at relevant points if, In My Humble Opinion, I judged them worthy (eg random fan pages which consist of "I'm going to write something soon" were not linked to). But most of those pages haven't been changed, worked on, etc, for years. Sooner or later they are going to die of random internet entropy. Should we copy and paste wholesale so that stuff isn't lost? Is that copyright violation (given that copyright is not renounced when posting on this wiki IIRC)? Can we get around that with a "please notify and we will take it down" notice?

Forum category: Wiki Discussion / General
Forum thread: Importing External Data

It pulls in the top ten items from the feed at del.icio.us for the tag "deltagreen". The formatting stinks, and it has dead links, but it works just fine. (You might remember my old arguments for doing this on the wiki's previous incarnation. I won't rehash them.)

Please take a look at the page, and make what improvements it needs.
Separating the site into "real world" and "fictional" geographical places is awkward, especially since list members spend so much time looking for items in the news etc that seem to blur the boundaries. I suggest merging the two. "Strange Places" is a more interesting title than "geography", but we can keep the "geography" tag.

Forum category: Wiki Discussion / General
Forum thread: Geography/Strange Places

There is currently a proliferation of one-referent tags, usually with the same title as the article. Is this useful?
Arguably tags are redundant, since if something is relevant to something else, it should be linked within the text. It might be useful to use them in the same way as Wikipedia uses "category" pages. In which case, should they be more general in their nature?

Forum category: Wiki Discussion / General
Forum thread: Tags

I included the history to give some context for the mess the wiki is in at the moment, but splitting that part off into its own article is just fine.

I proposed archiving certain threads in this format so that each original author can be given proper credit. Unlike many other wikis, the Fairfield Project does not have some sort of Open Licence - instead, each author retains his own rights. I did that because the same was true of the last wiki, and I simply don't see me as having the right to ignore the rights of many previous authors. Retaining the entire archived threads helps keeping track of who originally came up with what.

I know it's awkward, and I am open to better solutions - but that's not really something I can decide on my own. Instead, it should discussed on the DGML as a whole.

I haven't looked into templates so far, but I will check them out.

Forum category: Wiki Discussion / General
Forum thread: Improvement Guidelines discussion

I think the Improvement Gudielines article should split into two articles.

history of the Fairfield Project (TFP)

wiki guidelines proper

Viktor raises another, and a better point. Should TFP exist as an archive? I don't think it should. Wikis aren't meant to have static character, which is the only thing you need for an archive.

Jurgen?

Forum category: Wiki Discussion / General
Forum thread: Improvement Guidelines discussion

The Improvement Guidelines article says: "Improve the formatting in the Discussion page to make it more readable and add internal links to the rest of the wiki […]. Don't remove mention of the authors of the texts or edit the text itself in major ways - the goal is to make such articles more readable, not to deprive the original authors of their due credit!"

I'm OK with this, but I'm wondering about the extent of the editing. It would have some merit not to change any wording (or even spelling) on the Discussion pages, while editing the text found there (heavily) to create non-Discussion pages. The Discussion pages would then remain "uncorrupted" (yet nicely formatted and link-laden) "originals". This would be a sign of respect for the original intentions and personalities of the posters. Is that what you had in mind?

If we do this, it would be excellent to have those little Template_messages things for two functions:

1: "This is an original Ice Cave email transcript from the DGML (or Jürgen's private stash etc.). Do not change the wording" and so on.

2: "This page uses material from the Ice Cave discussion (link)here(/link), but new ideas are welcome as long as you do not alter the gist of each idea already attributed to someone else."

I can't find code for templates in the wikidot.com documentation though.

Are we still supposed to attribute individual ideas in non-Discussion pages to their originators, or is the Discussion-page link sufficient?

What about email in the form of structured, well-thought-out essays? Should we have a special policy (like locking the contents once properly formatted) for those? (For example, A Possible History of the Tcho-Tcho.)

Forum category: Wiki Discussion / General
Forum thread: Improvement Guidelines discussion

This forum is intended for general discussions about the Fairfield Project. Delta Green-related discussion not relevant to the Wiki should remain on the Delta Green Mailing List. Off-topic discussion should be in the Off-topic forum.

Appropriate topics for discussion might include formatting standards or sub-projects - for example, some contributors might try to improve and expand any articles related to Majestic-12, or PISCES, or the timeline and geography sections. If the traffic and interest are high enough, such sub-projects might justify their own subforums - but for now, everything should be put in here.

Forum category: Wiki Discussion / General
Forum thread: For your information
