The Varginha Incident

The Varginha Incident

A Delta Green shotgun scenario by some clown

-Background

For twenty years, Brazil was under the iron grip of a brutal military dictatorship that repeatedly violated human rights and suppressed any form of opposition. One of the subtler ways that the military crushed dissent was through the use of intelligence agencies, such as DOI-CODI and DOPS. But the most secretive and ruthless of them was MACABRA, (Military Action to Control Anomalies in Brazil), the paranormal agency of the military government. MACABRA was specialized in making people disappear and using extraterrestrial and sorcerous means to control the population.

Disbanded in the early 80s as the regime fell, many of its former operatives were hunted down by the paranormal agency that was instated afterwards by the New Republic, the DCS (Secretive Cases Division), which was in fact an offshoot of Cowboy Era Delta Green in Brazilian soil.

As the MACABRA operatives either were killed or went into hiding, many of their hidden installations were abandoned and fell into complete disrepair. Including those containing anomalies.

-Varginha

In 1971, several UFOs were observed in the small city of Varginha, in the hilly, rural part of Minas Gerais. The Brazilian Air Force was deployed, and a battle followed. A Pyrrhic victory was obtained, with almost a dozen modern jets being destroyed, but one UFO being successfully shot down, while the rest disappeared. The body of an unidentified species pilot was recovered from the wreckage.  The crashed UFO and its pilot were taken to a secret MACABRA base, disguised as a scrapyard, for further study.

During the autopsy, the creature suddenly woke up, creating havoc in the installation and killing people, until the agency finally shot it down. And then, a few hours later, it woke up again and they shot it down a third time. MACABRA decided to leave it frozen until they figured a way to make it either docile or assure it was dead. After MACABRA was disbanded, the facility was abandoned and went into disrepair, the freezer stopped working.

In late 1995, two scavengers entered the abandoned scrapyard and breached the doors of the basement installation. The creature escaped, and unfortunately for them, they happened to be suitable for alien reproduction. The alien overpowered and injected them with its DNA. Not long after, the scavengers had mutated into new versions of the creature. Now there were three of them, and the doors outside were wide open.

-Contact

Around January 20th, one of the Varginha extraterrestrials was first sighted by a group of three young women. They became traumatized by the event, and the being escaped. On the same day, another creature was seen roaming around, and the local firefighters managed to use nets and ropes to capture one of them. They first took it to the zoo, believing it to be some kind of monkey, and then took it to the local hospital for analysis. At night, the first alien is also captured by the police and sent to a hospital for analysis. But the sightings didn’t stop, as one of the creatures was still around. Soon, news that there were aliens in Varginha circulated around town, and shortly after, on national television.

As soon as MAJESTIC learns of the Incident, they send resources to take care of whatever was happening. A deal was quickly arranged with the Brazilian authorities, and the aliens would be extradited to the US in exchange for a lot of money. Soon, along with two senior MAJESTIC officers, Varginha would be swarming with military personnel looking for other creatures and spreading disinformation, such as claiming the alien was actually a local Insane homeless man and bribing/threatening people to shut up.

-The Call

The Player Characters are all either members of the DCS or one of Delta Green cells. On January 21st, their Handler calls everyone on short notice to send them to Varginha. Delta Green knows the following:

-> There are two captured aliens in Varginha, one of them is locked in high alert at the local hospital and being examined by MAJESTIC researchers. The other one is supposedly dead (temporarily) and awaiting transport to the US in the local military base

-> There have been sightings of another Alien in the city, and both MAJESTIC and local military are looking for it

-> News about the events are quickly spreading, and major television channels are already sending reporters to cover whatever is happening

Goal: Destroy the Alien corpses, find and kill the remaining alien. Disrupt MAJESTIC as much as you can. Make everything seem mundane.

-The Third Alien

Unbeknownst to everyone, the last alien, which was roaming the rural part of the town, had already reproduced with two people. One of them, an unlucky gardener, had already turned into an alien and was now moving towards the city center. The other one, a construction worker, is feverishly wandering around, in a delirious state. His mutation is only one or two hours away. If not found and stopped, the contagion will continue. Feel free to expand the chain of infection as you wish.

-The Varginha Extraterrestrials

There are currently two contained creatures, two roaming around the city and one in the process of being created. They are little more than mindless animals, and primarily seek to reproduce. They always resurrect very rapidly if killed and die only through unnatural means or complete obliteration. Typically, these beings are peaceful, but there’s a minimal chance they pick someone they see to reproduce. They can be very violent, but only if they are violently attacked.

The extraterrestrials have the ability to turn invisible, but their smell (which is a very strong chemical smell) remains. They sometimes walk on all fours or crouched down, and make strange buzzing sounds.

The Varginha Extraterrestrials are brown-colored, with building red eyes, and three protuberances on their heads. They have a strong ammonia smell.

Alien Reproduction:

When the extraterrestrials face a human being, roll a 5% check to determine if the person they’re seeing is or isn’t a potential vehicle for reproduction. If they are, the alien will attempt to bite the victim, transferring a solution with its DNA. The victim will be in a delirious state for 1d4 hours, while also vomiting and sweating profusely, before it transforms into an alien too. Witnessing this costs 1d6/1d10 SAN

-The Military

The military is looking for the creature, with orders to deliver them to MAJESTIC. They were not informed of what exactly the creature is, and will capture whatever seems out of ordinary, even animals.

-MAJESTIC

There are two senior officers in Varginha, one of them is in the hospital examining the creature with scientists and the other is in the military base, coordinating search efforts. If they find the aliens, they will examine them and then send the beings to the US in black military helicopters.

-The Press

Reporters from all over the country and even some from other countries will soon arrive in Varginha. They will interview anyone who has seen anything strange. If you want to make things harder, say a news helicopter and some news vans have arrived.

-The Townspeople

The population is terrified of the aliens. Whenever they come into contact with an alien or something unexplainable, roll a d6. 1-2, they try to attack the alien. 3-4, they run away, 5-6, they just stand around watching. Furthermore, they will do everything in their power to help the police or the military capture the aliens. Many think the creatures are actually demons rather than extraterrestrials

-The Truth about the Aliens

This is a possible truth: The Varginha Extraterrestrials were actually an experiment by the MI-GO to create a new type of Grey, one that had limited intelligence and could operate independently. This new being would be able to expertly pilot their spaceships, resurrect and regenerate, and seek reproduction. However, the project was eventually discarded by the MI-GO as the creatures were eventually considered too stupid. MAJESTIC was tasked by them with destroying the very last of these new aliens.

-The MACABRA Installation

The third alien can go back to the MACABRA installation if it finds no one else to reproduce. If the Agents go there, they will see a hidden creepy laboratory under a scrapyard, full of evidence of bizarre biological experiments and torture instruments. There will be empty cells, where the aliens presumably escaped from. There will be evidence that not only were shady experiments performed here, some were done to innocent civilians, including teenagers, that were arrested for “subversion” by the authorities two decades before. Discovering all of this costs 1d4/1d6 SAN due to violence.
