West Virginia is the only state to have seceded from the confederacy.
The pre-Columbian peoples of West Virginia's mountains, known as the Adena culture, were "moundbuilders", possibly a connection to K'n-yan. The Adena culture built large fortresses and towns. A few of their better preserved artifacts are their ceremonial pipes, carved of stone; they were exceptional works of art. Pipes and the smoking of tobacco became more common during the Late Prehistoric period, possibly using the Liao drug.
